Focus on Reading

Focus on Reading
Posted on 02/15/2018

We are only a few weeks into 3rd quarter but we are busy making huge changes. This quarter our K-2 students started off with our launching units in Reader’s Workshop. Students learned about what it means to grow your brain as a reader. We switched to a structure where students listen and actively participate in a focus lesson, then they independently practice the reading skill taught, and last they share their learning with the class. Our 3-5 classes are working hard implementing AVID strategies. This quarter our focus was on summarizing text read and using the Frayer model to understand academic language. We incorporated time to share our learning through the Stand-Share-Sit model as well as Carousel Feedback. Last, our whole school implemented the RTI process. Every morning from 8:55-9:25 students and teachers building wide are focused on growing as readers. Students work in small groups with teachers to learn specific reading skills. When not working with a teacher, they settle into a good book and read. We hope the RTI process will help all students fall in love with reading.
