Reading Buddies

This year we are excited to be starting a new program we call Reading Buddies. This program is designed to cheer on our young readers as they learn to read and become confident with the skills needed to do so. It also allows ours older students to develop and practice leadership skills they will need in the future.

Two students from our 3-5 grade classrooms were selected to start the program. They attended a 30 minute training. During this training, they were taught how to listen, provide help if needed, and give a compliment to encourage the younger student. Each Tuesday and Thursday our 3-5 reading buddies go into a K-2 classroom for 25 minutes and listen to all of the students read. They use their training to help strengthen skills our K-2 readers have by providing a specific compliment that reinforces what the student does. For example, they may say “I like the way you pointed to each word on the page.” They also provide assistance by nudging our little friends instead of telling them the answer. It sounds like “Can you use the pictures to help you figure out the word?” The current student leaders will continue this for the entire quarter. At quarter end, 2 new students will be selected and trained for 3rd quarter.

To date, we have had very positive feedback from students, teachers, and parents about this new program. Our younger students love to read with our older kids. They think it’s fun and they get a little extra special attention. Our older students enjoy being a leader and helping our little friends.  Our hope for the future is to grow this program to involve more student leaders. But we are excited for the great start!
