What's Going On?

Our staff and students at Lewis have been hard at work. This quarter our K-2 teachers have focused their learning on the workshop model. Their time has been spent observing expert teachers, learning about all things workshop, and projecting out our first unit. When students return for second semester they will see many beneficial changes. Students will begin each Reading lesson with a think aloud or modeling from the teacher. This type of instruction allows students to see strategies good readers use when they read. After the lesson, students will then be doing the work themselves. With this new model students will be reading and responding to text daily. The amount of time they will read will increase significantly. We are so excited to see how our students grow as readers!

Our 3-5 teachers have focused their learning on the AVID strategies for best practice. They have spent their time creating lessons that involve Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. Teachers have been learning through participation and trying out the new strategies themselves. We’ve had a lot of fun and put our learning to use by having conversations within the Socratic Seminar model. And we’ve documented our learning through note taking. We look forward to improving and going deeper with each of these skills during the second semester. Big changes are taking place at Lewis and they are all having a positive impact on our student learning!
